Amgen and the Amgen Foundation announced on March 23, 2020 an initial commitment of up to $12.5 million to support U.S. and global relief efforts to address critical needs in communities impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.  The funds will be used to support emergency response efforts in Amgen's U.S. and international communities, patient-focused organizations that are mounting their own response efforts, and international relief efforts by Direct Relief and International Medical Corps.

The Amgen Foundation will also match donations made by Amgen staff around the globe who wish to contribute their own funds to the relief efforts.

“Amgen is committed to supporting the Tampa Bay community during this unique and challenging time, “said Gwen Cummings, Amgen Tampa Site Lead. “Our mission is to serve patients and we are just as committed to our team and the communities in which we live.  While we are relatively new to the Tampa Bay area, we want to do our part to support those who need assistance as we get through this tough time together.”

From this commitment, $250,000 will be going to the United Way Suncoast COVID-19 Response & Recovery Fund and $50,000 will go to the Hillsborough Education Foundation. Through its fund, United Way Suncoast is supporting non-profit organizations who serve individuals and families in United Way Suncoast’s five county footprint who have been affected by COVID -19. The Hillsborough Education Foundation is addressing the technology challenges faced by students in need as local schools transition to online learning during these unprecedented times.

From Kimberly Jowell, CEO, Hillsborough Education Foundation:

“We are grateful for the support of the Amgen Foundation during this unprecedented time in education. This $50,000 contribution will help us bridge the digital divide and provide critical technology and online access for students in need in Hillsborough County,” said Hillsborough Education Foundation CEO Kim Jowell. “Our most vulnerable students are at the highest risk of falling behind in their studies because a lack of resources prevents them from connecting to their online learning platforms at home. Amgen’s generosity will allow students to fully experience and benefit from learning and to continue on their inspiring path of growth and achievement.”

From Jessica Muroff, President and CEO, United Way Suncoast

“We are grateful for leadership and critical support that Amgen is providing our region. These are unprecedented times that require significant and immediate action. The Amgen Foundation’s donation to United Way will directly and swiftly address the pressing needs of the most vulnerable families in our community impacted by this crisis. This includes food, emergency financial assistance, and essential worker child care.”
