Top research scientist joins Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute.
A world-renowned research scientist is joining the thinking elite in Lake Nona.
Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute announced today that it has recruited Dr. E. Douglas Lewandowski, a pioneer in unraveling the connection between nutrients and heart failure.
"This is really a major moment in the history of the institute and biomedical research in the Orlando area," said Dr. Peter Crawford, director of the Cardiovascular Metabolism Program at Sanford Burnham Prebys.
The metabolic events in heart disease is an active area of cardiovascular research. Lewandowski has been a pioneer in imaging and measuring metabolic activity in a beating heart. His research has also helped unravel the connection between fuel burning and heart contractions, and the impact on congestive heart failure.
Lewandowski arrives in December with his wife, Rita, who's a well-regarded piano instructor. She's transferring her studio here.
He brings along three members of his research team from University of Illinois at ChicagoCollege of Medicine, and will have a joint appointment with the Florida Hospital Translational Research Institute.
"My focus will be to translate findings in SBP's laboratories to human studies of the metabolic basis of heart disease at the TRI," said Lewandowski, in a statement. "It is this partnership that I anticipate will be a game changer in the way I will be able to implement the translation of my laboratory investigations, and I find this very, very exciting."
The institute made the announcement as thousands of cardiologists from the United States and around the world descend to Orlando to attend the annual scientific meeting of the American Heart Association this weekend.
