Florida Eye Specialists Selects LEITR as Tissue Provider
Partnership will increase access to premier ophthalmic care
Tampa, Fla. (February 20, 2015) - Florida Eye Specialists in Jacksonville, Florida recently merged three successful practices to provide patients one of the most experienced eye specialists in the region. The founding doctors of these groups have backgrounds with the Mayo Clinic or the University of Florida, combining the best academic physicians in the area. This will result in greater access to premier ophthalmic treatment. The Lions Eye Institute for Transplant & Research is honored to be the tissue provider of choice to support more than 100 annual corneal transplant surgeries completed each year by Florida Eye Specialists.
"We are thrilled to be working with such a tenured, respected group of surgeons," said LEITR president and CEO, Jason Woody. "Our role in this merger is to provide quality tissue that will help regain or enhance sight to people in this community."
Florida has one of the highest populations of blind and impaired people totaling more than 430,000. By supplying tissue supporting these surgeons, LEITR will help impact thousands of lives in Northeast Florida.
Florida Eye Specialists was formed late 2014 as three successful eye care practices merged together. With nine doctors and five centers in the area, the group has a regional focus with patients traveling all over the region for both routine checkups and specialized care. The various treatments and procedures are just as diverse as the geographic areas of the doctors in this practice.
"LEITR is known for its unique model, consistency and complete focus on quality," said Dr. Ravi Patel. "Their organization is completely aligned with our focus on excellence and will be a great resource to our recently merged organization."
LEITR will be collaborating with a team of surgeons including: Dr. Ravi Patel, current president of Duval County Society of Ophthalmology, named Florida Society of Ophthalmology's Outstanding Young Ophthalmologist and Outstanding Alumni University of Florida's College of Medicine; Dr. Amit Chokshi, chief of ophthalmology at Baptist Medical Center and prior head of cornea / refractive surgery at the University of Florida; Dr. Akbar Hassan, prior head of cornea /refractive surgery at the Mayo Clinic; and Dr. Rachana Patel, a board certified ophthalmic surgeon, fellowship-trained in cataract, cornea, and refractive surgery.
