The Lions Eye Institute for Transplant & Research Announces
$500,000 Donation to Help Floridians Regain Sight

Funds will underwrite corneal transplants for those in need over the next five years

Tampa, Fla. (July 14, 2014) - The Lions Eye Institute for Transplant & Research is proud to announce its commitment to endow an initiative of half a million dollars that will allow qualified recipients throughout the state of Florida to receive corneal transplants.

"This is the largest statewide foundation effort our organization has ever committed to," said Jason Woody, president and CEO of LEITR. "This pledge further demonstrates our responsibility to deliver on our mission to give the gift of sight to those in need."

Over the next five years, the initiative will guarantee corneal transplants for hundreds of Floridians, which on average costs $2,900 per case. LEITR works with a network of more than 50 surgeons in Florida to help accomplish these transplants.

Proceeds to support this initiative are raised through two major programs hosted by LEITR. The first is The Eye Ball Gala, the organization's signature fundraising event; and second is The Race for Sight, an annual 5k race and 1-mile walk through Ybor City.

Interested recipients should contact their physician or ophthalmologist for more information on how to apply. There is no age restriction and applicants must be a resident of the state of Florida.
